At the triennial general Assembly of ICOMOS held in Sydney, last September, Dr Susan McIntyre-Tamwoy was elected to the board of ICOMOS as the Vice President responsible for the Asia Pacific region.

Recently she reflected on the amazing roller coaster ride that has characterised her time in office so far.

It is a lot of work and that is the first thing I would say to anyone thinking of stepping up to role like this! But it has already been so rewarding to work with my fellow board members. I am enjoying working with my ICOMOS colleagues across the Asia Pacific Region to address many shared heritage conservation issues.

Since the start of 2024 Susan’s role has taken her to France for a board and bureau meeting, Japan to meet with colleagues to work on a joint project, to Korea for the launch of their new K-Heritage system. She has taken part in around 20 online meetings and workshop. She will be attending the World Heritage Committee meeting in New Delhi, India from the 21 July to the 2nd August 2024 as part of the ICOMOS delegation.

It is a significant time commitment and of course there is the actual work in between the meetings. I am lucky to be supported by the Australian national committee of ICOMOS which includes several former board members who are always willing to assist with advice. Also, my colleagues at NOHC are hugely supportive of my work, rallying around when I need to take leave for my overseas commitments.
