Braidwood Central School is a key historic element within the town of Braidwood. It is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register as a State significant heritage conservation area. The school was one of the first public schools to be established in NSW and has played a continuous role as a major centre for education in the NSW Southern Tablelands for over 160 years.
The school includes the original school building which is one of the earliest surviving public-school buildings to have remained in use for educational purposes in NSW. The school also includes the original teacher’s residence added to the site in 1881. The school is required expansion in order to continue to service the children of Braidwood as an engaging primary school. The project aimed to mitigate the potential impact of the proposed works on areas of archaeological potential, NOHC carried out targeted archaeological test excavation and monitoring of the proposed school expansion works.
