Cultural Heritage Assessment for a proposed integrated tourist development and golf course located along 1148 Wine Country Drive, Lovedale, NSW. This assessment followed a previous assessment of the area that had identified a number of Potential Archaeological Deposits (PADs) along the banks of the creeks that run through the property.
An archaeological survey and test excavation program was carried out to determine whether any subsurface archaeological material occurs within the identified PADs and if so to characterise the nature, extent and archaeological significance of that material.
Excavation revealed evidence of Aboriginal occupation of the subject area. Stone artefacts were recovered from all PADs and from the additional two transects. However, the distribution of artefacts was not even across the landscape. Higher concentrations of artefacts coincided with parts of the landform that were close to the confluence of Black Creek with small tributaries on slightly elevated ground which would be drier during wet weather and flood events.
NOHC provided a series of recommendations to salvage archaeological material and mitigate impact to the archaeologic significance of the area.
