The Medlow Dam was the first water supply dam built as part of the development of the Upper Blue Mountains. The upgrade works will ensure the road provides safe and reliable access to Medlow Dam and its associated facilities as well as ensuring that Water NSW is able to meet the level of service requirements for the facility.

The site listed on the State Heritage Register and is an important example of the "Wade" series of dams erected in NSW between 1890s and early 1900s for NSW country town water supplies which utilized a concrete arch wall and listed on the State Heritage Register. The project proposed upgrading the access road off Beauchamp Road leading to the dam, and construction of a new boat ramp at the Medlow Dam.
