Cultural values mapping

Exploring the places that are important to local communities.

Cultural values mapping goes beyond documentation of sites; it involves an exploration of elements such as landmarks, traditions, advocacy tools and truth telling.  Our team has developed participatory methodologies that we use to collaborate with communities to map places of memory, practice and collective and individual experience.

The end result is a culturally rich landscape map that can be invaluable to planning projects that seek to engage with community and respect and enhance places important to them.

While it can be applicable to all communities it is most commonly used in Indigenous heritage where it can play a significant role in understanding and preserving the rich heritage of Indigenous communities. It can be a powerful tool to communicate the significance of places to non-Indigenous stakeholders.

Our cultural mapping team can deliver a range of projects in this area including:

  • Cultural mapping at a landscape level
  • GIS layers of significant places
  • Oral histories and interviews of individuals
  • Community workshops
  • Input into Designing with Country projects.

We acknowledge Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their many diverse communities across our nation and their rich culture. We pay respect to their Elders past and present. We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as Australia’s first peoples and as the Traditional Owners and custodians of the land and water across the Australian landscape and seascape. We recognise and value the ongoing contribution of Aboriginal people to Australian life and how their contribution continues to enrich our society.
