History

Gathering evidence to provide the credible basis for our work and fostering truth-telling in our heritage interpretation.

At NOHC, we consider historical research to be fundamental to most of our heritage.

Archival and historical research can provide crucial evidence that shapes our assessments, interpretations, or advice to clients. Historical research offers an essential context for understanding our heritage places. Sometimes this research is crucial to understanding the heritage significance of a site and sometimes it can provide the data essential to verifying anecdotal reports about specific sites.

Our team of professional historians work closely with our experienced team of archaeologists, architects, and cultural heritage specialists to deliver a range of heritage products.  We use historical research to identify issues, gather and analysis data and develop conclusions, often integrating these with archaeological evidence.

Our services include:

  • Archival research (including images, photographs, and maps)
  • Historical research
  • Thematic histories
  • Oral histories
  • Consultation with clients and community (including museums and historical societies)
  • Site inspections and assessments to verify historic information

We acknowledge Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their many diverse communities across our nation and their rich culture. We pay respect to their Elders past and present. We acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as Australia’s first peoples and as the Traditional Owners and custodians of the land and water across the Australian landscape and seascape. We recognise and value the ongoing contribution of Aboriginal people to Australian life and how their contribution continues to enrich our society.
